I can recall that I was driving home from a Ladies Bible Study and getting no music on the radio stations.  I kept hearing news reports and I was wondering what was happening.  My sister had called and left a message on my answering machine along with my grandmother.  Once I heard these messages I quickly turned on the television to watch the devastation to one of our major cities.  My sons were young at the time but my oldest son can recall watching the buildings crumble and that picture is still in his head and he is now 14.
It amazes me that most can recall what they were doing that particular day.

I was pregnant with our 2nd daughter and the oldest was 14 months old.  I’m not a fan of news shows and had the tv on Disney–probably the Wiggles.  My mother emailed me and said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Honestly, I didn’t give it much thought because the impact didn’t immediately register with me. At the time, I dismissed it as “just a plane crash.” Not that plane crashes aren’t devastating, I just didn’t realize what had actually happened. She sent me another email and told me to turn on the news, there was a 2nd plane, she didn’t know the details but something wasn’t right. If I remember correctly, it actually scrolled across the bottom of Disney Channel. Once I switched it over, it was unbelievable. I was overly emotional because of the pregnancy and adding to that, my husband had already enlisted in the Air Force and was leaving for basic training 9/24. I watched it for a few days but my emotions finally got the best of me and I just couldn’t keep watching. I do remember the day the Operation Iraqi Freedom began–it was our daughter’s 1st birthday–the one I was pregnant with on 9/11.

I was home schooling my kids and had just sent my daughter to her room to try to stop the bickering between them. She heard the first news report on her radio and said the announcer was telling everyone to turn on their TVs. My husband was traveling out west and wasn’t able to get home for several days until airlines resumed flying. I had my kids write journal entries about the day, and those are included in a post which I wrote last year on the anniversary (an am re-posting this year)

I was busy trying to get to a hair appointment that day.  Didn’t have the TV on, and the first thing I heard was “The government is still intact,”  as I got into the car and turned the car on.  SCARED me to death.  Went to the hair appointment—I was the only one there with Peggy, who did my hair.  She had a small tv in her shop, and we watched as the towers fell.  When I think of that day, I always remember that.  She says she remembers me on 9-11 too.  Megan and Sam were newlyweds, living in an apartment in Cedarville while going to college there.  She called me after I got home—-there were many sonic booms in the air here from jets all around Wright-Patterson AFB and the Springfield Air National Guard Base.  She was terrified, as we hadn’t heard them here for many years.  And I also remember the clear blue skies that day and no planes overhead.

I was at home, having just sent my children off to school. I spent the day on the phone with family and friends and in front of our TV. We learned alot about ourselves, the world and prayer…

I was at work, we were getting ready to open when some one came in and said something about it.

We were at Magic Kingdom at Disney World.  The Country Bear Jamboree was about to start when an elderly worker for Disney came on stage and announced that the WTC had been hit by a plane.  At that point no one knew it was a terrorist attack.  He asked us to join him for a moment of silence.

When the show was over and we walked outside people were on their cell phones but still headed to attractions at the park.   We headed toward the Haunted Mansion and got in line.  By this point, the word had traveled that it was terrorist attacks and the towers had fallen.  When we got into the Haunted Mansion, they announced the park was being evacuated as Disney World had been identified as a potential attack point.

It was surreal being at “the happiest place on earth” when the attacks occurred.  Though I must give huge props to the Disney staff and management … the only evacuation to ever take place at Disney World was orderly and surprisingly calm.

We drove home from Orlando that afternoon, listening to the radio.  We didn’t see any of the video until that evening when we got back home.  There was a prayer service at our church … but no one really knew what to say or how to articulate our prayers.

I grew up in the 80s … I remember the Cold War and having nuclear attack drills alongside the fire and tornado drills that were common in Oklahoma.  My sister-in-law’s family lived 10 minutes outside Oklahoma City when the Murrah building was attacked.   But that night, as I sat in our church with my 18-month-old daughter on my lap, I knew “safe” as I’d ever understood it before was gone.

I had been married just over a year. I had not yet gotten my teaching job and was working at a greeting card store. I was off work that day, so I was sleeping in, plus we were on the west coast so it was still pretty early morning. My husband called me from work and told mr to turn the tv on b/c an airplane had flown into the WTC. I turned the tv on just in time to see the 2nd plane hit, and gear the live reports about the pentagon and flight 93 coming down. I spent the rest of the day in a daze in front of the tv either at home or my husband’s place of work. It’s certainly a day I’ll never forget, and I’ll never forget the loom on president Bush’s face when he was told of the second plane. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years!
