Top 10 Tuesday: Quotes from "Before Your First Book" by Jeff Goins {and a giveaway}

“Before Your First Book” by Jeff Goins

Recently, I had the opportunity to download a copy of Jeff Goins’ new eBook, Before Your First Book – 5 Tips to Getting Published Now, as well as a copy of his eBook, Every Writer’s Dream.

As an “aspiring” writer, I have found Jeff’s blog, weekly newsletter, and eBooks to be incredibly informative, encouraging, and motivating. Jeff is a writer who truly writes for the love of it, and he is so generous in sharing the tips and tricks he has learned in his writing journey with his readers. I highly recommend you follow him if you are interested in seeing your writing grow!

I just love the “tagline” that Jeff has added to Before Your First Book:

“Written for your satisfaction, butt-kicking, and general enjoyment.”

If that doesn’t tell you that this book is a down-to-earth and helpful resource, I’m not sure what will!

Since I’m sharing this post on a Tuesday, I’ve decided to do it “Top Ten Tuesday” style… and be sure to check out the end for an AWESOME giveaway from Jeff!

”The best way to practice is to do it in public.” No joke. It’s pretty scary to submit your ideas to the masses to for evaluation, but it’s the only way to find out if you have what it takes.

#6  – Stop waiting for permission.
God planted the seed that He wants me to write a book back in SEPTEMBER… and I have done nothing with it, except nurture the idea.

I am waiting for direction, but maybe the direction is much more subtle than I expect…

“Relationship and conversation are more important than good ideas and great writing.”  Even if no one ever reads what I’ve written, the relationships I’ve built will touch me forever!

I love Jeff and his blog!  Love this quote:

#9 – “For every hundred words I write, I spend about thirty to sixty minutes of editing and rewriting.”

I love this! That really breaks down the amount of hard work you have ahead of you.

#1 – “It doesn’t take long… to realize that getting published isn’t easy. It takes hard work, thick skin, and perseverance.”
This frightens me a tad bit because I am working on a novel right now. But I’ve always been one to persevere, so I think I can pull through to the other side.

I keep meeting this “encouragement to write” but something holds me back.  I guess the first thing is to identify the fear, then to actually make a plan to overcome it.  WOuld love to read the books to push me along that process.

Oops, forgot to say my most eyeopening quote, I guess if I’m honest it would be this one:
“Most writers are content to dream, but they aren’t prepared to do the work. So they fail before they begin.”

I have read some of Jeff’s work, and I always feel so encouraged and challenged when I do. I’m pretty sure he wrote the line about “Stop waiting for permission and prepare to do the work” specifically for me.
