The Potty Training Trick I Didn’t Know
By the time you reach the third kid, you should be a potty training pro, right? While I had managed to successfully potty train both a girl and a boy, there was a potty training tip I missed the first two times around – and one my eight-year-old actually discovered and taught me!
One of the biggest struggles I had while training my first two kids was getting splashed (or often drenched) when they would pee. They were ON the toilet, but they always managed to find the gap between the toilet and the seat.
Thanks to my 8yo daughter’s ingenuity, this time around, I have only gotten sprayed once – and it was in a public restroom and was totally my own fault.

The potty training tip?
Have your child take his pants and underwear completely off and SIT BACKWARDS on the toilet.
Seriously, this one tip has changed my life. No more having to deal with pee missing the toilet!
AND, the added benefits?
- My 2yo who can’t climb and off the toilet facing forward is able to climb on and off the toilet without help, which means I only have to “help” him when he poops and needs help wiping!
- Wiping is easier because I can actually SEE what I’m wiping!

Now I just have to teach him how to wipe and not use the entire roll of toilet paper in one swipe… but then again, I’m still working on that one with my 7yo. Can you relate?

Potty training my then 3 1/2 year old was awful! I had been trying since he was 2, and it seemed like nothing worked – stickers, candy, my tears…. Then one day, I bought him some Superhero underwear (I think there were 7 in a pack), and showed it to him. Of course, he wanted them, and thought they were awesome. I set the unopened pack right up on our fireplace mantle, and told him that everytime he used the toilet, he’d get a new pair of underwear. (In this case, it was just for pooping, because he had already been going pee with the potty, just refused to poop on it). The next day, he did it, and earned all of his new underwear in a week. He’s doing a great job now, and always uses the toilet, except he does still require a pullup at bedtime.

This may sound dumb, but we had just gotten new rugs on our tile floors when we started potty training my daughter. I was very worried about if/when she had an accident and how I’d clean it off my new rugs so I decided to buy some cheap shower curtains and put them over the rugs in our “potty training area.” It worked like a charm! She had very few accidents, but when she did, I was able to wipe it right up with some lysol wipes and kept the floor dry underneath.
