Summer Bucket List: Trip to the Zoo

In my mind, it’s not truly summer without a trip to the zoo!

We’ve been attempting to get to the zoo this summer, and though our first two tries weren’t successful {due to weather}, last week we finally made it. We took along a few friends and had a great day checking out the animals together!

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

The closest zoo to us is the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo – it’s about a 45 minute drive. We went for the first time last year, and really enjoyed the African Journey exhibit. This year, we discovered that we’d missed an entire exhibit last year – the Australian Adventure!

One of my personal favorites from this year’s visit was the Great Barrier Reef exhibit – I loved the jelly fish and the salt water fish tanks!

Jenny really enjoyed feeding the giraffes, even though the feeding platform was quite crowded {there were a lot of people at the zoo that day}.

David spent a LOT of time buckled in the wagon, as he kept trying to run ahead, and we actually lost him a few times.

We all really enjoyed the seal exhibit again this year – nothing quite matches the “coolness” factor of having these playful animals swim right up to the glass where you are standing!

I wish the zoo were closer to us – we would definitely get a yearly membership if it was!

The Complete Zoo Adventure

I’m so glad that our trip to the zoo doesn’t have to end when we get in the car to head home! A few years ago, I was introduced to The Complete Zoo Adventure from Master Books Publishing, and it has been a great guide for continuing our zoo adventure beyond the confines of the zoo.

A family or class trip to the zoo becomes an unforgettable learning adventure with this unique, evolution-free guide to the incredible world of animals!

Did you know:

  • That the flamingo’s pink color comes from the food that it eats?
  • That the hummingbird’s heart beats 1,000 times per minute?
  • That the polar bear has a third eyelid that acts as “sunglasses” to protect it from snow blindness?

The Complete Zoo Adventure sets the stage for learning with “Before the Zoo” preparations, gives you the tools you need for an awesome “At the Zoo” experience, and then continues to deepen the understanding of God’s Creation with fabulous “After the Zoo” activities. Truly a complete guide like no other!

Are you headed to the zoo this summer? What’s your favorite animal/exhibit?

If you come down, maybe we can join you! :) I want to take the kids to BPZ sometime soon, too… we’ve tried twice so far this summer, but the weather worked against us both times!
