OneVerse: My Bible Stack

340 million people don’t have God’s Word in their language. I’m NOT okay with that.

OneVerse Blogger

So I’ve joined a group of bloggers who are partnering together with OneVerse and The Seed Company to bring awareness of this vital need.

My Bible Stack

This month, we were challenged to find all the Bibles in our home, stack them up, and take a picture.

My kids joined me as we look around the house to find all our Bibles.

We found 16 “real” Bibles and another 3 “storybook” Bibles.

And the most convicting part? I don’t usually even carry a physical Bible to church with me anymore {or even read from any of these pictures during the week}. I’ve digitized myself to the point where I use a Bible app on my iPhone or iPad if I’m not sitting at my computer – and then I use the internet to look up whatever Scripture reference I need.

Honestly, the only time I use a “paper” Bible is when I’m doing in-depth Bible study.

What about you?

How many Bibles do you have in your home?

Do you spend time reading any of them on a regular basis?

What if you gave one dollar for every Bible you find to help fund the Bible translation efforts happening right now for the Vidunda people?

Each verse costs roughly $26 to translate, and your contribution will help translate God’s Word for the Vidunda people for the very first time, allowing them to know the love of Christ and enjoy a deeper relationship with Him.

So what are you going to do?

I’m linking up with the OneVerse Bloggers, and you can too! Take a picture of your Bibles and share them in our February linkup or on the OneVerse Facebook Page.

Sometimes, we don’t see the excess of our blessing until we put it all together. While I haven’t counted every single Bible I own, my collection certainly convicts me. Thank you for including way to allow us to help those who don’t have the Bible.

I love the ministry of OneVerse and am excited to be able to use my platform to help spread the message. Thanks for joining us in this effort to get the Bible into the native language of the Vidunda people!

I have about . . . *counts on fingers* . . . five Bibles total.  One was the first Bible I ever owned (it was a KJV), one belonged to my great-grandmother, one is an NIV Bible that I regularly read from, one is a Message New Testament (I read it only for commentary), and one is an ESV New Testament (I wanted to see why the Calvinists love the ESV so much).

I do have a number of versions in my stack for Bible study purposes. Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation, Travis!

I have been convicted before about the number of Bibles we have. I have begun giving away the ones we don’t use. I use a paper Bible almost all the time. I like to be able to write notes and highlight as I read and study, so I use an e-Bible sometimes. Thanks for the heads up about OneVerse and The Seed Company!

I get Bibles from the publishers I work with… I try to put them in the hands of people {especially my kids’ friends} who don’t have a Bible in their home. It’s a great way to share the Word!

And I do use a paper Bible when I’m studying the Word… I need to start carrying one to church again, though. The iPad/iPhone is nice, but you’re right – marking key verses, jotting notes, etc., is definitely something I’ve been missing!

Great idea, Ashley! I can’t remember how many times I have gone to Lifeway to take advantage of one of their great Bible sales because I noticed that one of the students in our church didn’t have their own copy of the Word! I’m so privileged to be walking along with you—sharing the Word as we can, where we are!

I love the pictures of your kids being so close in height to the stack of Bibles. Yeah, I don’t actually read most of the Bibles in my home. There’s only one or two that I actually use on a regular basis. This challenge was enlightening to say the least! Great post.

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I thought that was an interesting observation, too, that my kids were so close in height to the stack… definitely a challenging exercise!

Wow, that’s a big stack- makes me curious about what our would look like – I do use a few of them for study – but I use the computer for quick reference :)

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

You should totally join us in this challenge! OneVerse is inviting people to take photos and share them on Facebook!

yes, and thank you for pointing to these ministries too! :)

Wow – that’s quite a stack!  I’ve never felt quite as rich as when working on this exercise.  I usually read from paper Bibles each day (I have an ereader, but I just NEED that feel of paper in my hands), but I’m on Bible Gateway hunting down references all the time!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I found this past year that I read faster {more} from my iPad/iPhone – I used the YouVersion app for the Bible in 90 Days challenge last summer/fall – but I definitely prefer the paper version for actual Bible STUDY.

I always remind my children how blessed we are to have a Bible…and we have studied how others do not have one…and how many did not before they were printed!!!  Thanks for this!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I think I take the blessing for granted too often… definitely a great reminder of how blessed we truly are!

I’ve been convicted about this before,

Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation! I pray that your conviction, and my own, would not stop in our heads, but would be lived out in action!

Did I notice one in that stack that is duct-taped together?!  :)

  • http://turquoisegates.blogspot.com Genevieve Thul@Turquoise Gates

I own 23. Plus 4 copies of Egermeir’s, an old storybook Bible, one for each kid. It’s one of those first world Christian “rights” to own one in every translation (and maybe a Greek lexicon for good measure?). Thanks for calling attention to this issue. One note of dissent: one reason I have so many Bibles is because I am constantly giving them away to strangers and friends. So I pick them up at thrift stores when I find good translations. Maybe something to do with all our extras??

We gave our books/Bibles to the local Free Store awhile ago. I have 3 on my kindle and the Bible that was my Mom’s and one my husband bought me. One Verse is an awesome program.

Ashley, thank you so much for joining us this month in blogging to end Bible poverty! I can so relate to what you said about becoming so “digitized” that you read the Bible on your iPhone, iPad and computer. And I love seeing your kids do this activity with you! Great photos and very clearly written. Thanks Ashley!

Ugh. We’d have a stack that tall too, I’m sure. I struggle with feeling guilty, but this is a great way to share our blessings with others.

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I love that point – we only need to feel guilty if we are “hoarded” our wealth instead of using it as an opportunity to bless others. Thanks!

Wow.  Powerful post.  My stack of Bibles would probably be twice the size of your stack.

Plus I have numerous translations/paraphrases on my laptop in my Bible software.  Plus I have 4 different translations on my Kindle.

How blessed I am.  I write in my Bibles, highlight, mark them up.  Some people are aghast at the fact I would write in God’s Holy Word.

I’ve worn out several Bibles and gotten new – but then I keep going back to the old and familiar ones because I know I have a scripture about such & such highlighted in it, with a note somewhere and it’s on the left hand side of the page in either Galathians or Colossians – maybe.  Anyone else like me?  Or am I strange.

I don’t memorize scripture like I did when I was young.  I think I need to start doing that again.  If we didn’t have scripture so readily available we’d be memorizing more.  We need the scripture inside of us for those times when we need the Bible to come alive and minister to us in a sudden unexpected time of need.

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I’m like you – I hang on to old Bible because I know exactly where certain verses/notes are on the page!
