Hiding Gods Truths

On Parenting, 1 Corinthians 6.19-20, and 1000gifts… Monday Musings {01.30.12}

Quotes of note…

“The heart is the source of everything you feel, think, say, or do.”

Definition of heart: “the causal core of your personhood.”

“There’s nothing that comes out of the mouth of a drunk that wasn’t in his heart when he was sober.”

“Lasting change in a human being always travels through the pathway of the heart.”

“Your words always reveal your heart.”

{from Session 3: Targeting the Heart, Getting to the Heart of Parenting, Dr. Paul David Tripp}

Getting to the Heart of Parenting - Dr. Paul Tripp

These quotes were all part of a lesson on parenting. Why? Because we need to stop trying to control and managing our kids’ behavior and start working toward changing their hearts. Heart change deals with the source, whereas behavioral change deals with the symptoms of a “rotten” heart and can only be controlled so long as the individual is in a controlled environment.

Everything a person says and does is a result of his {her} heart overflowing. Whatever controls his {her} heart will shape his {her} behavior.

The problem with targeting heart change is that it takes a lot more time and effort because heart change is progressive – not instantaneous. As parents, we tend to be lazy and selfish, looking for quick fixes to our kids’ behavioral issues, often settling for temporary fixes {via threats, manipulations, and/or guilt trips} in lieu of delving into the heart issues behind the behaviors.

As Christian parents, we must seek progressive long-term change in our children – this is the goal of parenting.

    Yep…it’s all about the heart…our heart and their heart….

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

      Remembering that and ACTING on it… that’s the key!

    You are so right! I find that I often have to deal with similar heart issues myself before I can address it in my children—or we work on it together. I want their hearts to be right much earlier than mine so they won’t have all the baggage I’m working through now!

      I’m so there with you… I want to deal with the heart issues early on to avoid the pain of dealing with them after years of living a certain way!

    Amen.

      Blessings, Denise!

    I love this philosophy and try so hard to apply it. I have wasted far too many opportunities to discipline in the way that is best for my child instead of what made me look the best in front of others. This guy’s books are the best ones I’ve read on parenting thus far. Thanks for sharing Ashley! :)

      Thanks for your feedback, Kelly! I am learning SO much from Dr. Tripp!!

    YES! AMEN! I am so thankful God revealed this to me in the last year – it’s the heart that counts, not their outward actions! I was working so hard to change them on the outside, when what they needed was love, care, discipline, instruction aimed at their HEARTS. For the HEART is deceitful and desperately sick, who can understand it? Only God! I am loving these updates on this study, I may very well need to start this up with some friends! Are you doing it with your church?

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

      Yes, Lauren. We are going through this DVD series in our Marriage and Family Sunday school class at church. I have been so challenged and convicted as we’ve watched and learned – God is definitely making some major changes in MY heart, and I cannot wait to see how it impacts my parenting!!

    amen and amen – one of my repeated quotes in our home is “I think you need a heart change” and “do you need help to change your heart or can you work on it with God yourself?”

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

      I absolutely LOVE this, Kelli! Thank you for sharing!!
