My BIG Announcement

Our family is growing!!

There are three things that I’ve wanted for awhile

  1. To adopt
  2. Twins
  3. A dog

Today, I’m getting all three wishes fulfilled at once!

But first, let me back up a bit…

On Thursday, I unplugged for the weekend, and our family spent some quality time together. Jenny requested that we go to Burger King for lunch and then to the local shelter to play with the animals (we like to visit and get our pet fix), and since we were going to be sans kids for the weekend, we decided that going to lunch and the shelter together would be fun.

If you remember last week, I talked about how I wasn’t allowed to have a dog because I struggle with cleaning the house? Well, I’d been really diligent about cleaning last week, and my husband had noticed.

We had seen that the shelter had gotten a litter of puppies that had been dropped off the day before, so we were excited to get to play with some puppies. However, we had no idea that these “puppies” (only 12wks old, mind you) were already 30+ pounds!

It was too late. We fell in love.

And being the crazy people we are, we adopted two of the puppies – a brother and sister.

{Meet Noah and Nellie}

So in one afternoon, all three wishes were fulfilled: we adopted, we got twins, and we got a dog.

The kids and I are headed to the shelter in just a little bit to pick up
these adorable pups and bring them home!
For those who like details: They are 12wk old, “pure-bred” (supposedly, but no papers) English Shepherd pups. We are first-time pet owners and have NO idea what we’re doing. It’s definitely going to be an interesting adventure!

Oh how wonderful!!! We adopted 2 dogs from MS and while at times it's been nuts I wouldn't change a thing.

  • Jenny

Oh my goodness! Those puppies are beautiful! The kids must be so very excited… I can only imagine their smiles. Have a blast and congrats!

How awesome! They are adorable! Having had dogs my whole life, I highly recommend the Cesar Milan approach to discipline with dogs – so important from the very start! Just be the alpha dog in your house (kids too) and you can lavish affection of the fuzzy cuties!

Wonderful! :) Congratulations on your new additions!

That's Great! I'm sure you will enjoy them. It does take some getting used to but well worth it.

  • Miningfordiamonds

Wow! You are brave!!!! They are pretty dogs! I think I'd rather have babies myself, lol!

Congrats!! They're beautiful! Two words: "crate train"!! We've been dog owners all our lives but only discovered crate training a few years ago. I'll never have another do that's not crate trained!! We have an elderly dachsund/terrier mix who's NOT crate trained, and a black lab and Australian shepherd mix who ARE. Good info here: http://dogbreedinfo.com/care.htm

Congratulations! Have fun with your newly adopted twins! :)

  • Pam

Awwwww they are beautiful!!! Congrats on the new additions!

Something tells me those two "announcements" are only going to get bigger and bigger. I love them!
PS: I agree with Kara: Crate training is the best. Our little dog loves her crate.

Be sure to exercise or run them daily. They will be good dogs if they feel worked at some point in the day, also a point of calm at night, crate them, so they know every night that is where they go to bed. You won't have 'puppy' messes as much and they know that routine is the same every night. Problem solve before the problems happen. Be sure to not buy cheap food. Good food is really important don't be tempted to buy 'the lower side of quality'. Best of luck for all of you. We have always had two dogs together they don't get lonely and they can play. I hope you have a good sized yard. Also obediance train them now they are at a good age to learn, sit, lay down, stay, and reward them with a 'treat when they do'.

Don't I know it! I really didn't want "big" dogs, but they two are so
lovable… it was hard to resist! :)

Thanks, Kara! We are definitely crate training – and they're doing really
well so far. The hardest part is convincing the kids that they can't play
with them all the time, that they need to learn to be content in their
crate. Thanks for the link, too!

  • apichea

Thanks for the advice, Sharon! We've got them crated together, and they have
done REALLY well with the crate training so far. We're just struggling to
get them to do their business OUTside. All in all, though, the first 24
    hours have been great! :)

  • apichea

:) I was bummed to have missed you, too! I had planned to come over on
Saturday afternoon, but literally slept from lunch to dinner. I was SO tired
    for some reason.

  • apichea

Thanks, Audra. I'll have to investigate that approach, I've not heard of it
before. I do know a little bit about the top/alpha dog mentality and have
been trying to work on that with them. It'll definitely be an interesting
    adventure!
