Smoke Detectors
A 5:45 am wakeup call via a smoke detector is NOT the way I had planned today to start. I shot out of bed in a panic and ran through the house trying to figure out if anything was actually on fire. My husband hit the “hush” button and went back to bed.
After I determined that the house didn’t appear to be burning down, I climbed back in bed, but my nose was on overdrive trying to smell smoke.
20 minutes later, the alarms sounded again. At this point I was less worried and more agitated. It was at this point that J told me the batteries needed to be replaced – I didn’t know hardwired smoke detectors had batteries!
I searched the house for any 9V batteries, but didn’t find any viable ones {lots of every other kind of battery though}, so I headed to CVS to grab seven 9V batteries so we could replace all the batteries at once.

I got to CVS just after 6:30am and noted that the lot looked really empty, and in the back of my mind I prayed that there wasn’t an armed robbery happening inside {I have no idea why that thought even crossed my mind since stuff like that rarely happens in our town}. I found the batteries on sale, picked up some McDonalds for J for breakfast, and headed home to resolve the ear-splitting chirping.
I got all the batteries replaced, but the alarm kept sounding {until both kids were awake and my head was splitting}. Finally, I figured out that I had to “reset” the alarm after loading the new batteries.
It was a long morning!
Which Witch is Which?
One of Jenny’s spelling words this morning was “which,” which she spelled “wicht.” I grabbed the white board and we got to talk about which witch is which!
Witch: has an “itch” and only people can scratch
Which: is one of the “wh” questions you can ask

Armed Robbery
Remember above when I mentioned the “armed robbery” thought that crossed my mind at CVS this morning?
I was checking Facebook a little after 9am and saw this: Armed Robbery at Warsaw CVS.
So thankful the smoke detectors didn’t decide to start beeping at 2:45am!
From “I Want” to “I’m Thankful For”
We often like to go shopping as a family on J’s days off. Last week we were running errands around town, going in and out of several stores, and Jenny’s persistent “I want this…” or “Can I have that?” were getting to be a bit much – she couldn’t go three steps without seeing something she had to have.
So it was in the middle of the grocery store that I began to help her turn “I want” into “I’m thankful for.” We talked about the blessings that we have and that we need to be grateful for what we have, and then I had her tell me something she was thankful for each time she started to say “I want” or “Can I have?” – she even started to enjoy it and asked if she could tell me what she was thankful for without saying “I want!”
It won’t be long before her journaling each morning will include a list of her blessings!
