Monday Musings {06.25.12}: How to Avoid Library Fines, Unplugging, and Gratitude

How to Avoid Library Fines

I hear so many families talk about how they owe their local libraries so much money due to overdue books and resources. There’s an easy solution to this dilemma – know what you have, where it is, and when it’s due!

Each week before we get ready to go to the library, we take inventory of what we have from the library {including making sure we know where each item is in the house} and determine what needs to go back that week. It takes about 15 minutes each week to locate all our library books and check each one off the list before putting it back in the library bag, but that 15 minutes saves us from having to deal with overdue fines.

How do you avoid library fines?

Unplugging

I decided that I was actually going to honor my set “office hours” last week and be completely done working for the week when I shut the computer off on Thursday afternoon.

I “say” that my “office hours” are Tuesday-Thursday afternoons {with a few exceptions}, but I rarely actually ONLY work those days/hours.

It was tough to not turn my computer on for “one quick task” throughout the course of the weekend, but each time I was tempted to do so, I reminded myself that “one quick task” usually turned into a few hours of computer time, and that it wasn’t anything that couldn’t wait until Monday. I kept a list on my computer desk of all the items that I needed to be sure to address when I turned my computer back on so that I couldn’t use the excuse, “If I don’t do it right now, I’ll forget!”

Wouldn’t you know – when I finally turned my computer back on this morning {after we did school for the day – something else I’m working on}, it only took me about an hour to address all the tasks that I was tempted to complete over the weekend. Not turning the computer on this weekend probably saved me over 5 hours of computer time, plus the added bonus of being more present with my family!

When’s the last time you unplugged for an extended weekend? Do you unplug regularly to recharge your batteries?

Hi Ashley, It looks like you are so busy! I am stopping by from the back to school link up. Hope to see you at True Aim.

I’ve been discovering that I’m more efficient when I have a list of tasks to do and sit down to do them versus just being on the computer. I’m not to the point of work hours, but I do like that idea a lot!

I’ve gone back and forth on being “strict” about my “work hours” over the past year or so, but I find that I’m a better mom and a more focused worker when I have limits on my computer time. My time is much more productive online, and I’m able to get more done in less time. Now to stick with it!

Love the bed/book pics. My boys are the same way. I don’t know how my boys sleep because they have so many books in their beds each night.

I always have to remove a fair number of books from their beds each night after they fall asleep. I just love it!

I love the idea of keeping a list of computer related tasks. I often hop on to do one quick thing and walk away an hour later and I didn’t even do the one task! No overdue books for us because our library sends reminder emails of what’s due 3 days before it’s due. I can renew online, too. And I am totally with you on a well stocked pantry/freezer; such a blessing.

Oh the library fines! Yikes!! I signed up to have the books due emailed to me 2 days before they are due back, so that I have a list in front of me. We also have a Library Only shelf on our bookshelf which is where 99% of the books go. There is always a stray one or two that get taken upstairs :)

I’ve started letting the kids take the library bag upstairs {it used to have to stay in the living room}, and so far we haven’t lost any books. Praying it stays that way!

My tip for avoiding library fines is to sign up for email alerts from the library. I can renew right through the link :)

I am so guilty of turning on the computer to get one thing done and not turning it off at a reasonable hour and going to sleep.

We have the email alerts on 2 of the 3 cards we have, but my daughter’s card doesn’t have it yet.

Your new ‘do is cute! We [mostly] avoid library fines by requiring everybody to put their books back in one particular basket. But that’s not foolproof and certainly not as organized as your system!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

Thanks, Jamie! We tried keeping the books altogether, but the kids like having them in their rooms for quiet time and bed time, so that plan has failed. I’m so glad for a list to be able to check off!

Have you asked if your library will waive fines for homeschoolers? I know of a lot of libraries that do this for teachers & homeschoolers.

Boy did my budget open up when our rural libraries went fine-free! ;)

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

Wow – I’ve actually never heard of that! Thankfully, we’re a “fine-free” family, so we haven’t had to worry about it, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind if the situation ever comes up!

I hate it when people think its “funny” or “normal” having overdue library fines. Its rude!! Thanks for the post!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I understand the occasional late return (after all, life happens), but when it becomes the “norm,” I struggle with it.
