Is Social Media moving people away from God??

Recently, a classmate made a statement that the use of social media should be discouraged by churches:

“I feel social media, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and the like are destroying society. They cause people to… self promote constantly. These actions only move people further and further away from God and closer to the world. I believe this will be a major challenge of churches in the not too distant future if it isn’t already.

“What can the churches do to discourage the use of these sites as they take over more of peoples time?” {quoted with permission and edited for grammar only, not content}

Of course, I was quick to jump into this discussion!

Read my response and let me know what you think…

Rather than viewing social media as “destructive,” why don’t we use it to spread the Word?

As an avid social media user, I have had the opportunity to share the gospel with people around the world {in the last year, people from 79 countries have accessed my blog} and speak the Word of God into their homes without leaving my own home.

Through the use of Twitter, Facebook, and my blog, I have made connections with thousands of people I may never have otherwise met, having a chance to share God with them in real and instantly applicable ways.

I do understand the potential for social media to be hazardous, but such is anything in excess. I think rather than running away from social media, believers need to embrace that this is how where our society is connecting and learn to use it for God’s glory.

If people are connecting on social media, then the church needs to be in the social media world, building connections too!

Personally, I have a vision for teaching church leaders how to effectively use social media to spread the gospel and to draw their members deeper into the Word through social media discussions and interactions. I am hoping to launch a ministry/business to this end before the end of 2011, and I am currently working on implementing my methods in my own church.

If we look at the life of Jesus, we see that He met people where they were (woman at the well, the disciples, etc.). Social media is where the world is, so let’s meet them there and take them to our Leader!

Your thoughts??

Churches have been historically behind the times and resistant to change, which is a shame considering the Church began as part of a radical movement within a society. I agree with you that rather than bucking the changes, which can really put even MORE distance between us and "the world" to whom we are supposed to be salt and light, why not embrace it and work WITH it? The Spirit of God is so much greater than any of it anyway, don't we think He is big enough to use anything to penetrate the heart of man? I am a firm believer that any thing can be used for His glory. The same force/item that can be used for destruction by the enemy can be used for the glory of God. It's the intent of the heart. I see no reason why God cannot use the Internet for His glory. Even in the Bible the tares and the wheat grow together. It's really hard to separate the two. If one's heart is not right to begin with, then I don't think Facebook or Twitter will make it worse, kwim? It would only serve to reveal what is already there. What is in your heart is going to come out one way or another, that is why as believers we must strive to maintain a pure heart. If you're someone who has issues with addiction to media then yes, you need to use discretion. But I believe God can still use it and in fact I would dare say that I foresee in the future the Internet being a huge part of global evangelization.

That's just my take! Awesome discussion!

You know, Ashley, *anything* can move us away from God. So I agree with you. If you allow it to move you in the wrong direction, then sure, it isn't good for you. But I know that God can use us in the oddest of ways…if we choose to follow HIM. ;) Great post!

  • Amandablogs

I totally agree! I really think social media gets a bad wrap…in fact, I've been working on a blog post for Monday about that very issue. Social media has made my relationship with God blossom. I've found amazing Bible studies and resources, encouragement from other women, and writers and teachers who challenge me. I think people who fear social media are missing a huge opportunity.

I couldn't agree with you more (and not just becaue you're in #mym2). We only need to turn on the TV to see how important social media is to shaping the world around us. Church leadership shouldn't stick their head in the sand on this point–or risk becoming irrelevant.

Oh and can I say some of these #hellomornings women are rockstars…5 am discussions about changing church culture. Wow.

  • Janice

I concur. As Paul pointed out, "All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12). And in 10:31, "…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

So, if social media is taking over your life or you find yourself chasing it to feed your ego, then you probably need a break to "reboot" your priorities. Otherwise, it can surely be a great tool for blessing others and promoting the Kingdom of God. Thanks for the discussion, Ashley!

I knew I couldn't put my thoughts on twiiter so I am doing what I should have done…..post a comment! The points that stood out to me….first the reach that we have as Christians is amazing in the social media world. You are right, we can spread the gospel so easily with social media. That is the main thing and that is what our job as Christians is….to spread the truth about Jesus so others in the world can be saved. Like David Platt says in Radical and also Andy Stanley just said in last Sundays sermon that I listened to online…..we have to reach out across the world…who says it is just in our own community and in the US…it is every where. We are missionaries every where, we are to share the gospel every minute of every day.

Secondly, it does have to be like everything in our lives….we have to use moderation. Just like food, drink, etc, we can chose to be gluttons or we can use in moderation.

Thirdly, teaching the churches and pastors. I am so here with you and I can't wait to see what you have planned. Honestly I would love to some how be part of it. I see the same vision for my small country church. They just go a website but to twitter or facebook…..hah….probably never even though the pastor is my age – he and his wife don't use computer often at all. He did get his sermoms online but there is so much more.

Ashley, the person you responded to has to have a more open mind and heart. There are so many avenues for reaching others. We don't have to fly miles or ony go on mission trips. There is so much more we can do right at home!!

Thank you for sharing this. Your words are mine!

"We are missionaries every where, we are to share the gospel every minute of every day." This is SO true. I think we often forget that we are ambassadors for Christ at all times!

"teaching the churches and pastors" – I have found that when I connect online with new comers to our church, it gives us a common ground when we interact in person. I want to challenge churches to take social media beyond community, though, and challenge their members to go deeper with the Word and with each other.

"the person you responded" – After we spent some time discussing, he was quick to see the positive in social media. It was a great discussion and I wanted to continue it here!

    Thanks for stopping by!!

One of the reasons why I blog is to share my love of Jesus. :)

No particular medium is bad in and of itself. Forms of art and communication have always been applauded and criminalized (by the church and by the general public) for both their contributions and detriment to society. Likewise, social media has its pros and cons.

As Christians, I see the greatest danger of social media is the deception that because we have "seen" a hundred status updates and tweets and read a dozen blogs today, that we have connected with our community. Obviously, that is not true. The other danger I see is the huge drain they can be to our time, if they are allowed.

These forms of media are great for what they are: a momentary look into another's world. What we do with that look is up to us. We can pray, we can call, we can write, we can ignore….

Or we can leave them all be and focus on the people and needs that are physically before us. It comes down to following the leading of the Holy Spirit, not the legislation of "Christians should do this, Christians shouldn't do this."

Equipping and empowering churches to use technology and social media is one of my passions too. My husband and I recently launched MyChurchAlerts.com which allows churches to interact with their church members and ministry leaders via text and emails. We also just launched a text alert system for our local radio station (WBCL.org) that will send out text alerts and emails to inform their listening audience of school and church delays and cancellations.

I'd love to hear what your ideas are for social media implementation in churches. I'm currently serving on a team at our church where we are working to develop a social media strategy that will allow us to reach those in our community and around the world!

Keep up the good work Ashley! So excited that get to serve as a missionary from your living room!

The preacher at my local congregation is actually speaking on the internet and social media this coming Sunday. I am very interested in what he says and will let you know what his take is.
I agree with you about "using it for God's glory." In all honesty, I did not start my blog with the intent of spreading the word and I don't do it on a daily basis, but after "meeting" so many great people through blog hopping who love the Lord, it's hard not to! I love my Scripture Sundays or sharing verses that I run across. How easy is it to post a link to your blog and have others read about it in minutes! The ease of communications is amazing! Take advantage of this awesome opportunity.
I don't always comment on your writings, but your daily verses are inspiring. Were it not for my cousin Meghan (Tuckers Take TN), who also is amazing, I would not be linked up to you or other wonderful women who's true desire is to love God and raise their families in the nurture and admonition of His name.
    Thanks Social Networking! =)

I totally DISAGREE. If used correctly and wisely Social Media CAN and WILL impact this world for GOD. I have met people whom I am connecting with and working with doing the WORK OF THe kingdom only because of SOCIAL MEDIA. God is using social media in my life and in the lives of countless others to IMPACT THE WORLD. Satan, our enemy can use anything – TV, money, social media, to destroy our world, but GOD can overcome all of that. We must look to him for guidance in anything we pursue and use not just social media, but ignoring it would be a shame because of the impact it CAN have. Its going to impact our society one way or another, why not use it for HIS good.

  • Alyssa Avant

Exactly, had to say also you say, "Social media is where the world is." Didn't God command us to go into Judea, Samaria and utter most parts of the world?" With social media we can do that so much faster.

  • sisterlisa

I agree. Go where the people are. Using the Internet to share the good news that Jesus reconciled us to Father is the FASTEST most effective and most cost effective way to evangelize.

  • SomeGirl

Wow, that is thought-provoking! I can see where that person is coming from, but I agree totally with you! It always comes down to a matter of heart, doesn't it (we either self-promote or glorify God with our words, written or spoken).

I agree with you. Anything in life can become an addiction or distraction. I use social media to evangelize, and connect with people and cultures who are not in my physical proximity. I blog, and twitter with people who I may have not appoached or met in the physical world. I talk to many other Christian women who share my same issues who I can not always connect with in my local church. It think its a evangelize tool that should not be overlooked.

I think, too, that there is something about the written word that has more
sticking power than the spoken word. You mentioned how you can connect with
women online that are not as easy to connect with in person – I have found
the same to be true. These women are some of my “best” online friends, yet
our “real life” connections are less than stellar due to various obstacles.
What a blessing we have in technology when we use it for the glory of God!
