Five Minute Friday: Awake

Awake.

What a perfect word for me right now – it’s one that I’ve been struggling with almost daily!

Alarm Clock 3

Whether it’s struggling to become awake each morning {waking up long enough to get out of bed} or stay awake each night {some nights I can’t fall asleep and others I can’t stay awake}, being awake has definitely been a major challenge in the last several months of my life.

Beginning this past summer, I started experimenting with my diet, looking for ways to eliminate some of the symptoms that were causing me to be so tired all the time. I eliminated most dairy and even tried a gluten-free diet for a time. While on my gluten-free and dairy-free diet, I began to feel better – to feel “normal” once again. As I began to ease back into a “normal” diet, introducing individual foods one at a time, I didn’t notice an extreme difference. But as time progressed, it became quite obvious that dairy was a major factor in my struggle to be awake.

I’m at a point now where I try to limit the amount of dairy I consume. I’ve completely eliminated anything made with fresh {not cooked} cow’s milk, as drinking/eating such gives me an instant sinus headache. And I’ve learned to listen to my body when I’ve had too much dairy…

I’m joining The Gypsy Mama’s Five Minute Friday: Awake. Won’t you join us?

This is very interesting Ashley! I actually struggle with the portion of insomnia where I’m initially unable to fall asleep easily. I’d say over the past year and a half, I feel tired most of the time. I know there are actually multiple reasons this would factor into my life right now, but I love how you’ve taken this “awake” angle into a personal routine of yours. I’m fascinated actually and I think it’s very wise of you to have tried to investigate ways to better your stamina.

You feel better? I’m so happy to hear it! Thank you for stopping by my blog today! I’m honored by that and I want you to know it. :) Have a wonderful day!

A year ago, I was struggling with really bad insomnia, which was somewhat corrected with chiropractic adjustments. That, however, led to the discovery of a dairy allergy which directly impacts my energy levels and ability to be “awake” {gives me sinus congestion and headaches}. Having found the “issue” has been a blessing as I’m able to regulate the amount of dairy I take in over a period of time. I’m still not where I’d like to be, but I struggle to limit my dairy intake as I love cheese and chocolate! :)

Oh that would be hard! I once had a doctor advise me to cut out dairy completely too. It wasn’t the fullness of my issue, but it did help. I’ve cut back as well…but could never say “goodbye” to chocolate. Oh how it is my weakness. :)

I’ve completely switched over on milk {I drink only coconut milk now}, but cheese and chocolate are definitely my weaknesses. When the headaches come, though, it’s easier to cut back than when I’m feeling fine. :)

I hear ya on this one.  I don’t have an issue with dairy (that i know of), but I have been struggling with sluggishness lately.  For some reason, winter always gets me and it’s a real fight to be awake and to feel like I’m really connecting with the world.  Blessings to you!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

Winter is definitely the hardest time of year to be “awake”! I try to go outside and shovel or walk to the mailbox on days when I’m struggling – the fresh air works wonders!

I think it is so awesome that you have been intentional with your diet.  It’s amazing how our bodies can react so strongly to things.

It’s not been easy, but I’ve found that I can’t function if I’m not! I’m thankful that {at least for now} I only have to learn to live with limited dairy. The four weeks I was 100% dairy-free and gluten-free was extremely difficult!

I noticed such amazing things too when I went off dairy, sugar and gluten. But let me tell you, that ain’t easy. In fact I limit my intake of all these a ton but to be totally off it was insane but insane in a good way. I looked great for sure, anyway I hope you get to the bottom of it. One thing that really does change me as far as dairy goes, is Raw milk. if you have access to that in your area it works wonders for me. it’s outlawed in a bunch of states due to regulations which is stupid but that’s the government for you…

ok as for the real reason I came to your blog. I have to tell you the words you left for me on mine touched my heart immensely today. “ministry of prayer” wow. I know there are 24 hour prayer churches and prayer trees, and intercessors and and and but the words ministry of prayer hit me like a ton of bricks and you’re right, it’s such a gift. that WE can pray for someone unbeknownst to them and see results…it’s like any other ministry…like giving, or preaching or being a missionary…thank you for that realization today that although might seem elementary in Christian standards spoke volumes to me and had be praying with fervor for my friend. BLESSINGS TO YOU!

I’ve actually switched to coconut milk for drinking and cooking – it’s just the cheese and chocolate that I struggle to cut! :)

I’m so glad I could be the instrument of God to bless and encourage you today!!

This has really got me thinking.  I’ve been prompted to recently look at my caffeine intake habits but am considering other dietary changes too, as I too notice that some days I’m sluggish by mid-afternoon.  My sleep patterns seem all over the place and I thought it was “just” hormonal, but your intuitive post has prompted me to think about diet too.  Thanks

I find that starting my day with protein {eggs} instead of carbs {cereal, pancakes, waffles, bagels, etc} helps me to maintain my energy levels better, too.

It’s amazing the difference when we start to look at food as fuel…and start to experiement with what types of fuel are best to keep our bodies running well and healthy.  Good luck as you continue to figure this out.

Also, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Thanks, Katrina! I never would have thought I’d be in this place of having to moderate my dairy intake a year ago. It’s amazing how our bodies change as we age.

That’s two people I’ve seen who’ve discovered they have a milk problem in the last few weeks. I’m glad you figured out that you need to avoid it. I think I’d cry if I couldn’t have milk at least once in a while. :-(

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

It was hard to find something that would satisfy my thirst for a glass of milk, but coconut milk is growing on me. :)

Ashley, this tricky bodies of ours — so amazing how they are designed, and yet so tough to figure out, sometimes, what is best for them.  Blessings to you this week, sister, and prayers for His rich rest and peace.  So happy to have met you here.

So, I was checking out the info on the MasterBooks party and I was wonderfully surprised to see that your Awake post – I did one last week too  :)    Being Awake/Staying awake has also been a problem for me and I didnt realize that Gluten could be a factor!  I did find out that my new ottaman was treated with formaldahyde so that was making it worse…  I will definitely try the gluten thing though – thanks for the info!

    • http://blog.ashleypichea.com Ashley Pichea

I know that a number of people have noted that cutting gluten from their diet has made a big impact in their energy levels. Praying for you as you attempt to discover what your issue is!
