Finding Freedom: Week Seven

Join me in Finding Freedom this summer – freedom from perfection, control issues, and the tendency to listen to talking snakes {i.e. believe the lies of the devil}.

Each Thursday we’ll be looking at three chapters from I Blame Eve, discussing what God is teaching us through what we’ve read and looking for ways to apply our learning to our lives.

Finding Freedom at LIFE by Ashley Pichea

Chapter 19: I Am A Wreck

“It is in moments of complete brokenness that fear often takes flight in our souls. We become overwhelmed with anxiety and worry. Anxiety creeps in on soft feet and cripples us, filling our minds with doubt and what-ifs.” {p. 136}

“Stop looking to yourself for your salvation. It’s not going to happen.” {p. 139}

Chapter 20: I Am in Denial

“I’m in denial about the amount of control I have in my life. I like to think I can run my life like a well-oiled machine. I like to think I can do so without help. In reality… I would be lying if I said I don’t need divine intervention on a daily basis.” {p. 141}

“Sometimes life flips us head over heels, and we are caught off guard, looking for a soft place to land. That soft place is the palm of God’s hand.” {p. 142}

“When we are caught up in life, ignoring God or pretending we don’t need God, we are saying, ‘In my own strength, wisdom, forbearance, etc., I know all I need to know to get on with this life, and I don’t need you.’ We may not think this is what we are saying, but our actions speak far louder than our words. If we are pursuing perfectionism or trying to control the outcome of our lives, we are not pursuing our Creator or letting him work out what he desires in us.” {p. 143}

“When we get close to God, our entire perspective changes. We can own up to who we are (sinners miraculously saved by grace) and let him do the deep work that needs to be done in our lives.” {p. 145}

Chapter 21: I Need a New Idea of What Perfect Looks Like

“Despite my best efforts, it can be difficult to decipher the path God has laid out before me.” {p. 148}

“We survey everything through a self-centered lens… Our perception of a good life is not necessarily God’s perception of a good life.” {p. 148}
