Essential Oil DIY Recipe: Homemade Vicks Shower Tablets

Here in Michigan, we are deep into the middle of cold and flu season. That means lots of stuffy heads. That’s why I was excited to see that my latest DIY essential oil recipe subscription box included most of the ingredients to make homemade Vick’s shower tablets.

One of the things I love most about this monthly essential oil recipe box subscription is that not only do they sent you the oils, but they include most of the items to make 4-8 different essential oil recipes.

The essential oils subscription box I recently received had a great recipe for “Shower Disk Pick Me Up,” aka DIY Vicks Shower Tablets.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • (optional: 1/2 c citric acid – to make them fizz!)
  • 2.5 Tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
  • 1 Tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon menthol crystals
  • 50 drops Ravensara essential oil
  • 25 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 15 drops Defender essential oil

Instructions:

1. Mix baking soda, cornstarch, and citric acid (if using) together in a small bowl.

2. Use a double boiler to melt the fractionated coconut oil and 1 Tablespoon of menthol crystals together.

3. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, and add the essential oils.

4. Stir well.

5. Slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture, stirring constantly until the mixture is the consistency of wet sand. (Add a few drops of fractionated coconut oil if mixture does not pack easily.)

6. Place a pinch of unmelted menthol crystals in the bottom of a Tablespoon scoop.

7. Pack the remainder of the scoop with the sand-like mixture and press firmly.

8. Carefully tap the scoop out, cover with a paper towel, and allow to air-dry for approximately twenty-four hours.

9. Wrap disks with cellophane or plastic wrap to keep them fresh.

To use the homemade Vicks shower tablets, simply drop a disk near the drain in your shower, and enjoy the release of pressure in your stuffy nose and head!

Please note: This Vicks shower disks recipe is in no way associated with Vicks. I received a copy of the homemade Vicks shower disks recipe from Simply Earth in a monthly subscription box. This article simply shares my personal experience with the Vicks shower tablets DIY.
