As a busy mom, I struggle to drink enough water every day, but I know that it’s so important. Staying hydrated not only helps my body but it helps my brain, too. I’ve come up with a fairly good system for drinking more water each day, but in case you need to be convinced of the importance of drinking water, here are four reasons to drink more water every day.
Why Drink More Water? To Have More Energy
A major cause of fatigue and weakness is dehydration. Proper hydration helps maintain clear thinking and better concentration.
Too often, we think we’re hydrated because we’re drinking liquid all day long. The trouble with that thinking is that many of our favorite liquids are actually causing dehydration rather than hydrating our bodies. Coffee, tea, pop/soda, alcohol – all of these can actually cause dehydration.
While consuming these beverages in moderation isn’t necessarily harmful, be sure you’re upping your water intake to counteract their dehydrating effects. For example, if I drink a cup of coffee in the morning, I add an extra 8oz of water to my daily intake goal.
Why Drink More Water? For Healthy Skin
Consuming enough water hydrates your skin, diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, and it helps to flush toxins out of your body!
If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling.
One of the easiest tests of hydration is to pinch the skin on your knuckle – if the skin stays pinched after you release it, you need more water!
Why Drink More Water? For Weight Loss
Staying hydrated ensures that your organs are working optimally. This increases your metabolism, allowing you to burn more fat. Plus, water has no calories!
If you don’t drink enough water, you can easily become dehydrated. Many actually mistake their thirst for hunger, and this is one of the basic premises behind the idea that drinking water may alleviate hunger and help you lose weight.
Be careful, though – many weight loss “helps” on the market are designed to reduce your water retention, and thus make you weigh less. This is both dangerous and misleading. Why Drink More Water? Because You Need It!
Water allows nutrients and oxygen to travel to organs and cells throughout our bodies. Water also regulates our body temperature, removes waste, and protects our joints and organs.
The human body is approximately two-thirds water, and our bodies lose approximately 2.5 liters of water each day (more if you sweat)!
Be sure to replace all that water to keep your body hydrated and in good working condition.
How Much Water Should You Drink?
Generally speaking, the recommendation is to drink the number of ounces that matches half of your body weight in pounds each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink around 75 ounces of water daily.
If your liquid output is greater than the average adult (i.e. you’re pregnant/nursing, you sweat a lot, etc.), you’ll want to increase your intake. Also, if you drink dehydrating beverages, you’ll want to increase your intake of hydrating beverages (water, milk, juice, etc.).
On average, men should drink around 3 liters of water a day while women are recommended to drink around 2.2 liters of water a day.
