5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Every winter I find myself struggling with a case of the winter blues – a combination of cabin fever and boredom from being “cooped up” in the house. If you suffer from the winter blues like I do, I want to share five ways to beat the winter blues with you.

5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

1. Go Outside

This is the easiest way to perk me up during the mid-day lull. Whether it’s a short trip down the driveway to check the mail, playing in the snow with my kids, or grabbing a shovel and digging out my van, simply getting out of the house and getting a breath of fresh air is often just what I need.

2. Bake a Sweet Treat

I don’t do a lot of baking normally, so this is a fun way for me to break up the boredom of the winter blues and surprise my family. Whether it’s a pan of cookies or some brownies, a few minutes spent baking in the kitchen warms the house and helps me pull out of my winter funk,

3. Take a Field Trip

Whether your kids are in school or not, it’s always fun to visit a local museum, science center, or library. During the winter, taking a field trip during the week or on the weekends is a great way to break up the monotony and get the family out of the house for some together time.

We’ve been to the Children’s Museum, two Art Centers, and the Library already this winter!

4. Meet Friends for Coffee

Although this year, my ability to do so is limited, in past winters I’ve enjoyed meeting up with a few close friends every week or so to chat for an hour sans kids and spouses. Getting out of the house and spending time with other moms is good for my sanity, especially during the long winter months.

5. Dig into the Word

Normally when the winter blues get a strong grip on me, I find that I’ve been neglecting to be in the Word regularly. Spending time studying the Scriptures and in prayer is such an encouragement to my heart and gives me the strength I need to push through the long winter months.
