7 Tips for Sticking to a Schedule

Sticking to a Schedule Can Be Challenging

I’ve been known to over-schedule myself and find myself stressed to the point of wanting to throw my schedule out the window. Sticking to a schedule can create more stress than it alleviates if we become a slave to the schedule.

Do you ever struggle to stay on task and have your schedule run smoothly?

7 Tips for Sticking to a Schedule

Here are seven tips to help you plan more effectively and stick to your schedule:

1. Spend 10 Minutes

It only takes about 10 minutes to plan each day. Take 10 minutes at the end of the day or at the beginning of the days to set a plan for that day.

2. Only ONE Calendar

Simplify your life and use only one calendar for scheduling appointments and special dates. {The only exception would be a family calendar on the fridge or other visible location – be sure to update it weekly.}

3. Stay in Control of Your Day

By spending 10-20 minutes at the start of your day planning and prioritizing, you have a task to return to when interruptions occur rather than returning without a plan.

4. Schedule Immediately

Don’t leave the doctor’s office or other appointment without scheduling your next visit. You won’t forget and you’ll save yourself a phone call later.

5. Overcome Procrastination

Break up big projects into smaller projects that are less overwhelming. Tackle the hardest part first.

6. Create a 25% Buffer

Leave at least 25% of your daily schedule free for unexpected interruptions.

7. It’s OK to Cancel

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and overloaded, cancel everything for your day except the 3-4 most important activities.

Which of these tips are you going to put into practice today?

  1. The CALENDAR! We have not entered the land of smartphones here. We have so. many. calendars. So many. Well, I just ordered a used iphone to use for apps with wifi and I am soooo excited to finally have one calendar I can sync with my computer and take with me! Great tips!

  2. Hi Ashley! I like the way you have boiled this subject down to some simple steps – schedules are key to getting things done – yet there are so many interruptions (esp when you are a homeschooling family!) it sometimes seems impossible to follow one. I especially like your point about leaving a 25% margin in your schedule. We tend to try to pack too much in, don’t you think?
