living intentionally by faith everyday

What I Wore and Wrote Wednesday {02.29.12}

I don’t get dressed for the sake of being fashionable but in order to set the tone for my day and my family. Without the accountability of this weekly post, I’d probably live in sweats. In order to live each day with intentionality, I start by intentionally getting dressed…

The Maid of Fairbourne Hall by Julie Klassen {book review}

{From the Publisher}

To escape a scheme to marry her off to a dishonorable man, Margaret Macy flees London disguised as a housemaid. If she can remain unwed until her next birthday, she will receive an inheritance, and with it, sweet independence. But she never planned on actually working as a servant. And certainly not in the home of Nathaniel and Lewis Upchurch–both former suitors.

As she fumbles through the first real work of her life, Margaret struggles to keep her identity secret when suspicions arise and prying eyes visit Fairbourne Hall. Can she avoid a trap meant to force her from hiding?

Brimming with romance and danger, The Maid of Fairbourne Hall takes readers inside the fascinating belowstairs world of a 19th-century English manor, where appearances can be deceiving.

{My Thoughts}

Note to self: Do NOT start this book an hour before you hope to go to sleep. It will NOT happen!

I brought this book to bed with me last night, thinking I’d get a few chapters into it and set it aside til tonight. I was wrong! A few chapters into the story, and there was no way I’d be able to fall asleep without knowing how the story resolved!

Margaret isn’t safe at “home” anymore {her step-father is trying to force her to marry his nephew through any means necessary}, so she runs away with her former maid who was just let go. As fate would have it, she ends up as a housemaid for her former almost-betrothed {and his sister and brother} whose proposal she had rejected two years prior when she fell for his older brother.

Due to a clever disguise, Margaret is able to hide among the other servants without recognition from these former acquaintances. Meanwhile, Nathaniel is still pining for the girl who broke his heart – little does he realize that she is living under his roof!

While reading The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, I found myself lost in the world of 1815 England. I felt as if I were one of the servants watching the characters every moves and waiting to see how the drama would all play out. Julie Klassen did a phenomenal job of creating a must read book!

I give The Maid of Fairbourne Hall five out of five stars!

Disclosure: I received a copy of The Maid of Fairbourne Hall from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Top 10 Tuesday: Quotes from Pursuit of Proverbs 31

A brand new Bible study was just released yesterday: Pursuit of Proverbs 31. My friend Amy Bayliss wrote this Bible study based on her life experiences and her study of Proverbs 31.

I am so excited about this Bible study, and I wanted to share it with you!

From the Website

Come along and journey with Amy and take a look at the real woman of Proverbs 31. She isn’t as perfect as she seems. In fact, I think she is a lot like you and me.

In Pursuit of Proverbs 31, Amy Bayliss gives you a biblical view of the scriptures that are found tucked away at the end of the book of wisdom. With Southern charm and raw, real emotions she’ll tug at the core of your being. She’ll give you a new perspective and inspire you to pursue Proverbs 31; she’ll inspire you to pursue Jesus.

10 Amazing Quotes of Truth from Pursuit of Proverbs 31:

#1 – What God revealed through His word is that unless our ultimate pursuit is of Him, then we cannot physically accomplish anything and still honor Him… So, I could accomplish my goals and tasks using my own will power, persistence, and ambition but it would not be unto God which defeats the purpose.

#2 – Most of us are, or will be, teachers to someone at some point in our life so we must know how to study the Word.

#3 – Let me tell you something. You do not have to spend an hour in prayer. Nope. You sure don’t. Your life is a dialogue with Him. He hears your every thought and spoken word.

#4 – Although it helps, the effectiveness of you following God’s will does not hinge on whether or not your husband is. God will, and does, honor your obedience. Do not disregard God’s will because you do not actively see the
hand of God working on your husband. That is a job done in the heart and is not always immediately evident by actions.

#5 – We have an awesome power of influence with the words we speak. Let’s make sure they are edifying and wholesome.

#6 – We are God’s masterpieces and He decided long ago what gifts He would give to us and what calling He would place on our lives. Almost everything I have experienced up until now has prepared me for what I am doing
today to reach His people.

#7 – A wise person once said that if you want to get up early in the morning and exercise, you need to make the decision to do so the night before and take action to make it happen by setting the alarm clock. If you don’t, then you will leave yourself open to make the decision not to or perhaps you’ll sleep in the next day relieving yourself of the choice all together.

#8 – Praying for God to meet all of our needs early in the morning is a great place to start. Reading His Word and meditating on it will provide us with a great resource within our very own spirit. This will give us the self-control and desire to work through our microgoals for the day. This also enables us to know more quickly how we should handle or react to certain situations.

#9 – If you have loved and welcomed Christ as your Savior then yes, there is a ministry inside of you. The more you get to know Him and wait on Him, the more He will reveal it to you. It may be from within your home, via the internet, or even through written words. Don’t limit God.

#10 – God’s ways aren’t always comfortable. Sometimes listening to Him can be a bit annoying to our flesh… But, He is always giving us just what we need to accomplish His will and there are no lasting effects when we allow Him to have control. Our life-giving choices bring eternal rewards. He allows us to be a part of His grand plan.

If you’d like to join with other women studying through Pursuit of Proverbs 31, Christin at Joyful Mothering will be leading a study beginning March 5th. Amy and Christin will be sharing their hearts as they take you through the book, one chapter at a time with exclusive videos by Amy, coupled with Christin’s additional insights and experience.
